September is generally a cooler, gustier month than August and the days start to shorten. You should still be enjoying lots of fresh fruit and veg from your garden and you'll be busy making the most of the last rewards of the harvest. However, a small selection of veg can still be planted in September ready for harvest later in the Autumn, such as salad leaves, oriental crops and radishes – all of these ingredients would be perfect for an Autumnal salad. If you decide to use a greenhouse or fleece cover, you can even extend the growing season further by a number of weeks to grow into late autumn or early winter.
September is also a good month to think about what you would like to plant ready for the next growing season along with collecting seeds for next summer. Make the most of the remaining warmth while you can!
