Getting out and about
to meet poultry
enthusiasts is one
of the best aspects
of my job. I’m lucky to have the
chance to spend time with so many
interesting people and I suppose
that, to some extent, I take it for
granted. But working on a wellrespected
magazine like this one
certainly opens doors which might
otherwise remain fi rmly shut.
Every now and then, though,
I take a step back to appreciate
the sheer breadth of this hobby.
Keeping chickens is an amazing
thing to do in itself – it’s useful,
fun and unfailingly interesting
– but the way it draws people
together, sometimes from the
most unlikely quarters, is a
constant source of fascination.
It’s an all-encompassing sort
of hobby that neatly cuts across social
boundaries. It doesn’t matter how much
money you’ve got, where you live or what your
personal circumstances are; if you want to
keep a chicken or two in your garden, and are
prepared to give them the attention they’ll
demand, the chances are that you can.
Chickens are an amazingly good way
of bringing people together and, because
there’s always so much for us all to learn,
there’s never any shortage of things to talk
about. Picking the brains of those more
experienced than you is one of the best ways
to gain knowledge, so you should never
pass on the opportunity to ask questions.
Finally, with Christmas just around
the corner, let me end by wishing you
all a very merry festive season, plus a
peaceful and poultry-friendly New Year!
