Pam* didn’t want to engage in small talk with me, so she launched straight into why she had come for coaching. ‘I have been in my job for seven years now and I haven’t received a promotion. I work in a large company and I take on more work and more responsibility each year. I am even asked to train new members of staff and then they get promoted over my head! I’m wondering what is wrong with me.’ I asked Pam if she had received any feedback at work. ‘They say that I am doing a good job and they pat me on the back, give me a small pay rise each year, then load me up with more work than anyone else. I’ve asked if I could do more qualifications, but they always say they don’t have the money… and yet, I see other team members getting sponsored to do training.’ Pam looked very despondent. ‘What do you want to achieve in our coaching sessions?’ I asked her.
