“It’s so necessary to focus on the light – it powers you through the dark”

Former wild child, respected film producer and all-round Hollywood sweetheart, Drew Barrymore, reveals how she overcame the heartbreak of divorce to find joy, comfort and peace, and why she believes laughter really is the best medicine

Drew Barrymore

Profile

F or someone who, let’s be frank, is Hollywood royalty, Drew Barrymore couldn’t be nicer. Warm, kind and enthusiastic, she radiates with a sincerity that makes her captivating as an actress, but also incredibly vulnerable in an industry where the circling media are always looking for their next prey. But Barrymore is resolute: insincerity is simply not her bag and, besides, what could be better than a good chat? ‘I don’t pace myself to manufactured candour; I just don’t think about it,’ says the 42-year-old with a shrug.

‘What I’ve been through in my life isn’t unique – we all experience relationship breakdowns, we question our decisions and choices, and go through dark times, but talking about it is therapeutic, healing and nurturing. Of course, I definitely keep some things to myself, like we all do. I’m human.’ But for someone who has gone through more than her fair share of heartache, the former child star is still admirably candid. Born into a showbiz dynasty – the Barrymore lineage of entertainers dates back to the 18th century, while her godparents are big-screen legends Sophia Loren and Steven Spielberg – her life has played out like one of the cinematic melodramas her family is famed for.
