Syrian soul food

Mixing delicious dishes with heart-rending tales, this cookbook

celebrates the sadness and joy that surrounds cooking and sharing traditional Syrian dishes

The women behind Syria: Recipes From Home are Itab Azzam, who grew up in Syria and has been living in the UK since 2011, and Dina Mousawi, who was raised in Baghdad and has been living in England since she was eight. They wanted to share, ‘The glories of Syrian food and honour the brave women who are fighting back against the destruction of their home with the only weapons they have: pots and pans. We met women living in a tent, a bedsit and on the street,’ and, as one of the women, Mona, who contributed her story says: ‘The thought that someone might be cooking my maqloubeh makes me so happy. It means people in the West are thinking of us.’
