Whatever your faith, this time of year is a natural period for gathering together and feasting. In modern celebrations, we’re really taking part in traditions that stretch back thousands of years to the midwinter pagan festivities: dark days that culminated in the winter solstice were customarily ‘lightened’ with seasonal feasts. Despite our abundant supply of food, and the fact that the darkness can be removed by the flick of a switch, this is still a meaningful time for family and community; to collect and foster cheer when, for many, our mood and energy are at their lowest.
