Jean E. Pendziwol tests the waters with her debut adult novel, The Light Keeper’s Daughters

NEXT SUMMER, Jean E. Pendziwol will follow nearly two decades of kids’ writing with her first adult title, a departure that has drawn lots of attention.

“I don’t see it so much as turning from children’s literature to adult literature, as it’s just another way to express an idea or bring a story to life,” says Pendziwol, who has been shortlisted for both the Governor General’s Literary Award and the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award. “I think [picture books] will always be rewarding and appealing for me, but the story that wanted to be written was more complex. It was a new challenge, and came at a time when I could devote myself to exploring those complexities … and to discovering ways to build the layers of a novel.”
