WHEN THE TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION announced its call in 2011 for commemorative projects honouring residential-school survivors, acclaimed Kwagiulth and Coast Salish artist and master sculptor Carey Newman had deeply personal reasons for wanting to participate. His father, Victor, attended several residential schools as a child, during which time he was forbidden from speaking his own language, practising any cultural ceremonies, or communicating with other family members.
