Revisiting Summer Show Highlights

The summer show season started late for me this year. I spent most of July doing research and writing. August started witha bang the first weekend of the monthas the Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies joined the Prescott Arizona club to host a wonderful three-day show.

The first question that comes to mind when you hear about an August mineral show held in the Arizona desert is, what about the heat? All summer there are reports of temperatures reaching 110-115 degrees in Arizona. Why have a show under such conditions?

First featured in Rock & Gem years ago Tony Zanekci continues to sell his beautiful paintings at shows.

The answer is Prescott is not in the Sonora desert. Prescott at one time was the state capital of Arizona. It is in the northern foothills of the Bradshaw Mountains where nearby gold, silver, and copper mines operated when Arizona earned statehood in 1912. Not far away was the gold, silver, and copper mine at Jerome, which became the richest in Arizona. Prescott was also a hub of transportation in the mountainous region, and ranching in this high country chaparral was important. Not far southof Prescott is a cattle area famous for a feud; an area called Bloody Basin.
