A Teaching Sample

BENCH TIPS

Recently I taught a carving class at the Modesto Junior College in Modesto, California. The title of the class was “Carving Smaller 3D Shapes and Enhancing Cabochons.” The primary tool I used was a Thex shaft unit utilizing diamond burs, Mizzy dry grinding wheels and hand fabricated wood wheels. The wood wheels are made from various diameter wood dowels and wood wheels cut from ¼” thick molding strips. These wheels are shaped with a coarse file as they spin in the Thex shaft handpiece. They are used in the sanding and polishing steps of the carving process.
