In an age when we are bombarded by more images than ever before, sporting photography risks becoming predictable. Rowing photography is not immune – it is a challenge to take images of the sport which differ from that which has been seen before. That is where Canadian photographer and engineer Stephen Orlando comes in.

Orlando is not a rowing photographer by trade, but his wish was to bring something new to the sport’s public presentation – he hoped that people viewing his shots would be able to imagine going through the same movements that the athletes in the photographs underwent. He wanted to create an aesthetically pleasing image that portrayed every intricacy of the rowing stroke, by using LED lights and colourful patterns along the surface of the water. Orlando called the end result ‘Motion Exposure’.
