The 2017 Budapest Cup, Hungary

A little over twelve months ago, an invitation via an unsolicited email arrived in the ROW360 inbox. ‘The Budapest Cup Regatta’, we were told, was a rowing race that had been ‘growing steadily since 2011’. It was apparently ‘well worth a visit’.

We gladly accepted. At very least we would get to see one of Eastern Europe’s most enchanting cities. Jasper Jolly made the trip; see his article ‘Pearl of the Danube’, in our Issue 11. In Budapest he found a small but impassioned group of individuals with high ambitions. The end-game, he learned, was not simply to produce a well-organised domestic club regatta, a feat they had arguably already achieved, but rather they dreamt of hosting world championships and Olympic Games and of sparking a renaissance in Hungarian rowing.
