Kerri Gowler & Grace Prendergast

Photography BENEDICT TUFNELL

Imagine crossing the finish line, winning gold, and then hearing over the tannoy the magic words “world best time”. It’s something which will happen to very few rowers in their careers. But New Zealand speed queens Kerri Gowler and Grace Prendergast stand out in a raft of top-class oarswomen around the world, since they currently hold three world best times — one under-23 and two senior — and they haven’t yet won an Olympic medal.

Gowler won’t be 24 until December: Prendergast turned 25 on Friday 30th June, the day that she and Gowler rowed their first ever race at Henley Royal Regatta. Three days later they won the inaugural women’s pairs event, receiving their winner’s medals in little red boxes from Helen Glover and Heather Stanning, the duo into whose shoes they hope to step, and a mere two weeks after breaking the British pair’s world best time.
