Studying differences in motivation The Drive to Succeed

Nobody has ever contested the indisputable fact that rowers are highly motivated individuals. It kind of goes hand-in-hand with getting up before the sun to work out for 2+ hours in varying degrees of cold and rain. However, understanding the differences in motivation between individuals is a more complex topic. It’s a topic that I’ve been interested in since I joined the rowing community, and one that has only become more interesting since I began to coach and became captain of my college team.

Let’s open our exploration of motivation with Andria and Nimisha. They both rowed for two years in high school and decided to row for the same college. They rowed in the same boats throughout high school and their high school coach ranked them fairly evenly. Once they arrived at college though, Andria started getting faster. She consistently scored top erg scores for the freshman class and was moved up into the top eight by the end of the year. By her senior year, Andria became one of the top performers on the team and was elected to the captaincy.
