Boat acceleration profile and effective catch

Over the last 30 years we have worked with thousands of rowers of various levels all around the world to measure boat acceleration. With today’s technology this is the easiest biomechanical variable to measure – you can even do it with your smartphone. Usually, the boat acceleration curve during the stroke cycle looks like this (see Fig.1).

Key points throughout the curve have a specific purpose for evaluating rowing technique:

1. Zero before catch defines the moment when boat acceleration becomes negative during the recovery. This is when the crew starts pushing the stretcher and the seat slows down before the catch. At high stroke rates, and in better crews, this moment occurs later and closer to the catch.
