What’s the point of the World Rowing Cup?

It was created 22 years ago by FISA to provide a focus for crews who wanted to race abroad against international opposition. Previously countries had to guess which others would be attending the international summer regattas, with regular events in places with six-lane courses such as Lucerne, Duisburg, Ratzeburg, Paris, Piediluco, Cologne, Amsterdam, you get the idea. Except that it was a lottery choosing which to attend to make sure you competed against the best.

FISA fixed this problem by inventing the world cup series of three regattas three weeks apart, spaced across the summer and with points on offer to encourage attendance. The “world cup champion” concept hasn’t perhaps been as successful as hoped, but the second and third regattas are places where nations can be sure of getting top-quality rivals and a feel for their likely world champs speed, even if not every team attends every regatta. 
