Asiya Mohammed, 29, (pictured above) is set to compete at Tokyo 2020 in the PR1 women’s single and is the first Kenyan female rower to qualify for the Paralympics.Her journey is a triumph over adversity. At two years old Asiya was hit by a train as she crossed the railway near her home. She lost both her legs and several fingers. Seven years later Asiya was orphaned. She was raised by a cousin and later trained to be a teacher. She then left the classroom to focus on rowing. Borrowing equipment from her able-bodied male compatriots, she competed at the Africa Continental Qualification Regatta in Tunis. Her ambition is to win a Paralympic medal.
