Diamonds, Quads & Quintuples

Quizzing the British Quartet
(L-R) John Collins, Jonathan Walton, Graeme Thomas and Jack Beaumont

”I remember if I got injured or sick my rowing was finished. There was no support for me here, no one to fall back on.”

The dry reserve of the Stewards’ Enclosure commentator — “… at the progress boards Leander striking thirty- eight lead…” — is all but forgotten, Henley Royal Regatta 2012 is complete bar the prizegiving ceremony. Stragglers stagger across Butler’s Field stumbling over discarded picnics. Heavy legs and cloudy heads, all swimming in Pimms, falling through the queues of traffic, make their way to see the silverware awarded. A tinny voice blares from the tannoy. It punctures the evening warmth. The last of the day’s sun burns out across the River Thames and the adjacent champagne sipping spectators nuzzle in towards the stage. The voice announces, to the well-heeled crowd and the occasional empty green deckchair, both the name of the event and its victorious winner.
