Kiwi rower Rebecca Scown is a two-time world champion in the women’s pair and has a career total of seven world championship medals. In Sarasota last summer she returned to the eight, helping to power the Kiwis back onto the podium, winning a world championship bronze

Why rowing?

I rowed a little at school, really because my brother and sister were rowing at the time and it was quite a big part of the school’s tradition. I didn’t want to miss out. We never trained hard at school, and I had no intention of continuing after I left. However, a gap year in the UK had me feeling out of shape, so I joined my local rowing club in the summer, trained really hard, went to the nationals and won my first medals. It was the first time in my life I had found something that seemed to suit me, and something I wanted to throw everything into. I couldn’t stop until I knew how far I could go with it.
