Making History

Given unprecedented access, Row360 heads to Vermont to meet the people behind Concept2; rowing’s biggest business, since 1976

Pinsent and Redgrave, Murray and Bond, Glover and Stanning - I could go on. In a sport known for its enduring partnerships, none have made a more transformative impact than brothers and founders of Concept2, Dick and Peter Dreissigacker. They need little introduction; whilst continuing to change the shape of the oar industry (literally at times), Concept2’s intended sideline, the now infamous ‘erg’ swiftly consumed the rowing, gym and CrossFit markets, bringing rowing into the mainstream and forever changing the way we rowers train and are measured. It’s hard to imagine the sport now in a world without Concept2.

Approaching the small town of Morrisville, home to Concept2 and the birthplace of every one of their oars and erg machines you have ever laid hands on, it seems ironic that a device famous for providing lonely torture and many a rower’s darkest hour, could originate in a place of such tranquility and picture postcard-like beauty. A quiet road winds passed green mountains, disheveled red barns and local stores the 21st century seems to have forgot, right to the front door of Concept2. A campus of single-story buildings house the administrative offices, conference rooms and oar production line whilst the rowing machines are made down the road in a separate facility. The huge automated solar panels on the front lawn, providing 40% of the company’s electricity, highlight the fact that 40 years in, Concept2 is a progressive company.
