Motherhood may not spell the end of a female athlete’s career

For a very long time child-bearing was believed to signal the beginning of the end for women athletes across the world. But intriguing new evidence now suggests that there may be numerous physiological as well psychological benefits for female rowers who return to action following a pregnancy.

In 1672 the eminent Dutch physician Regnier de Graaf published one of the defining works in the history of biology where the process of a pregnancy was illustrated with the following words: “As a foetus grows, it prepares death for its mother.”
