SIMPLE STEPS HOW TO WORK A BACKSTITCH SEAM
1 Pin the pieces together with RS facing, lining up the edges you want to join. Thread the needle with yarn and insert it into the front of both layers of the fabric, into the hole that is 1 stitch in from both fabric edges (or where the seam needs to start). To join a side edge, insert the needle 1 stitch up from the bottom edge (or where the seam needs to start) and 1 stitch in from the right-hand edge.
2 Take the needle around the bottom edge of the fabric and reinsert it into the same hole as before, from front to back – this will secure the end of the seam. Don’t pull too tight or the fabric will pucker – aim for a firm but even tension.
