AFRICAN FLOWER MOTIF

STITCH PATTERNS

We use a few variations of the classic African Flower Motif in these projects. Here’s how to make each one...

NOTES

See the Stitch Diagrams on page 24 when making the Motifs.

TRIANGLE

Ch5 and ss in last ch from hook to form a loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch3 (counts as tr throughout), tr in loop, (ch1, 4tr in loop) twice, ch1, 2tr in loop, ss to top of beg ch-3. [12 sts, 3 ch-1 sps] Join yarn in any ch-1 sp.

Round 2 Ch3, 6tr in same sp, 7tr in each ch-1 sp around, ss to top of beg ch-3. [21 sts] Join yarn in top of beg ch-3.

Round 3 Ch1 (counts as dc), *dc in each tr of 7-tr group, spiked tr in sp between 4-tr groups from Round 1; rep from * around to end, ss to beg dc. [24 sts] Join yarn in second dc from Round 3.

Round 4 Ch3, *tr in next 2 sts, (tr, ch1, tr) in next st, tr in next 4 st; rep from * around to end, ss to top of beg ch-3. [27 sts, 3 ch-1 sps]

SQUARE

Ch5 and ss in last ch from hook to form a loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch3 (counts as tr throughout), tr in loop, (ch2, 4tr in loop) 3 times, ch2, 2tr in loop, ss to top of beg ch-3. [16 sts, 4 ch-2 sps] Join yarn in any ch-1 sp.

Rounds 2-4 As Rounds 2-4 of Triangle, working each rep a total of 4 times on each round. [36 sts, 4 ch-1 sps]

PENTAGON

Ch5 and ss in last ch from hook to form a loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch3, tr in loop, ch1, (2tr in loop, ch1) 4 times, ss to top of beg ch-3. [10 sts, 5 ch-1 sps] Join yarn in any ch-1 sp, or ss into ch-1 sp.

Round 2 Ch3 (counts as tr throughout), (tr, ch1, 2tr) in same sp, (2tr, ch1, 2tr) in each ch-1 sp around, ss to top of beg ch-3. [20 sts, 5 ch-1 sps] Join yarn in any ch-1 sp or ss into ch-1 sp.

Round 3 Ch3, 6tr in same sp, 7tr in each ch-1 sp around, ss to top of beg ch-3. [35 sts] Join yarn in any tr.

Round 4 Ch1 (counts as dc), *dc in each tr of 7-tr group, spiked tr in sp between 4-tr groups from Round 2; rep from * around to end, ss to beg dc. [40 sts] Join yarn in any spiked tr.

Round 5 Ch3, *tr in next 3 sts, (tr, ch1, tr) in next st, tr in next 4 st; rep from * around to end, ss to top of beg ch-3. [45 sts, 5 ch-1 sps]

HEXAGON

Ch5 and ss in last ch from hook to form a loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch3, tr in loop, ch1, (2tr in loop, ch1) 5 times, ss to top of beg ch-3. [12 sts, 6 ch-1 sps] Join yarn in any ch-1 sp.

Rounds 2-5 As Rounds 2-5 of Pentagon, working each rep a total of 6 times each round. [54 sts, 6 ch-1 sps]

HEPTAGON

Ch5 and ss in last ch from hook to form a loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch3, tr in loop, ch1, (2tr in loop, ch1) 6 times, ss to top of beg ch-3. [14 sts, 7 ch-1 sps] Join yarn in any ch-1 sp.

Rounds 2-5 As Rounds 2-5 of Pentagon, working each rep a total of 7 times each round. [63 sts, 7 ch-1 sps]

Waistcoat

Yarn and Colors Amazing, (100% acrylic, 100g/310m), 2 balls of Yarn A Black (100), 1 ball of each: Yarn B Vanilla (010), Yarn C Mustard (015), Yarn D Pink Sand (040), Yarn E Jade Gravel (073), Yarn F Glass (072), Yarn G Sunset (021), Yarn H Orchid (052), Yarn I Lilac (055), Yarn J Navy blue (060), Yarn K Cotton Candy(037), Yarn L Girly Pink (035)

A4mm (US G/6) hook

TENSION

Rounds 1-4 of Hexagon measures 10cm (4in) across widest points

ABBREVIATIONS

spiked dc Insert hook in sp indicated, yrh and pull loop up to heigh of current round, yrh and pull through both loops

NOTES

Waistcoat is made up of African Flower Motifs.

All Motifs are made first before sewing them together. There is a Construction Diagram on page 24, which you will need to refer to when joining the Motifs together.

This pattern does not use the Motif patterns listed on page 16.

WAISTCOAT

HEXAGON MOTIF (MAKE 28)

You can use any colours for Rounds 2-4 except Yarns A and B.

Using Yarn A, ch4 and ss in last ch from hook to form a loop.

Round 1 (RS) Ch3 (counts as tr throughout), tr in loop, ch1, (2tr in loop, ch1) 5 times, ss to top of beg ch-3, turn. [12 sts, 6 ch-1 sps]

Fasten off Join any colour in any ch-1 sp.

Round 2 (WS) Ch3, 2tr in same ch-1 sp, ch2, (3tr, ch2) in each ch-1 sp around, ss to top of beg ch-3, turn. [18 sts, 6 ch-2 sps]

Fasten off Join any colour in any ch-2 sp.

Round 3 Ch3, (tr, ch3, 2tr, ch1) in same ch-2 sp, (2tr, ch3, 2tr, ch1) in each ch2-sp around, ss to top of beg ch-3, ss to next ch-3 sp, turn. [24 sts, 6 ch-3 sps, 6 ch-1 sps]

Round 4 Ch3, (6tr, ch1) in same ch3-sp, (7tr, ch1) in each ch-3 sp around, ss to top of beg ch-3, turn. [42 sts, 6 ch-1 sps]

Fasten off Join Yarn B in first st of any 7-tr group.

Round 5 Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), *dc in next 7 tr, spiked dc in ch-1 sp in Round 3; rep from * around, ss to beg dc to join, do not turn. [48 sts]

Fasten off Join Yarn A in first st.

Round 6 Ch3, tr in next 2 sts, *(tr, ch1, tr) in next st, tr in next 7 sts; rep from * 4 times more, (tr, ch1, tr) in next st, tr in final 4 sts, ss to top of beg ch-3. [54 sts]
