Can yarn dyeing benefit the environment? Botanical Inks is about to find out! The yarn company has been awarded a grant from Fibreshed South West to research and develop pigments that use abundant native and invasive plants local to the Dartmoor area. Those pigments will then be used for large-scale dye productions in the UK. By harvesting plants that are exceedingly plentiful, the team hope to actually benefit the biodiversity of the area by allowing other plants more space to grow. They plan to make four final dye colours, which will be used to dye Botanical Inks’ local regenerative lambswool yarn. Both the yarns and the pigments will be available to local designers and makers.
