Patterns are the blueprints or recipes that enable you recreate something using your hook and some yarn. They use all sorts of jargon, symbols and a type of short-form language called ‘abbreviations’ that gives different stitches and techniques a brief code in place of full words. This shortens the text of a pattern so it can convey what you’re supposed to do using less space.
Different patterns are put together differently – with varying abbreviations, terminology, language and formatting – to communicate the instructions to you. It can be confusing, but here we’ll explain how to decode the information. Let’s hook…
