Watercress is an all too often overlooked salad leaf. Stood next to the much talked-about rocket and spinach, watercress could be termed the nutritional underdog when it comes to sourcing much-needed vitamin K. These small, round leaves with edible green stems have a peppery and slightly acidic flavour, belonging to the Brassicaceae family of vegetables (the same family as kale, cabbage and Brussels sprouts). This popular salad leaf was first grown in the UK in the early 1800s and was initially considered to be a weed. Now, watercress can be grown at home with reflative ease, even for those with the least green of fingers. Or for those who are short on space, it can be sourced from your local supermarket in handy pre-washed packages!
