It had seemed like an ordinary day. My partner, Ashley, the children and I were driving to our local supermarket and I remember feeling particularly happy: after a bit of a rocky period following the birth of our son, Noah, Ashley and I had reconciled and planned to live together – maybe even buy a house and get married. Suddenly, I saw Ashley let go of the wheel and collapse sideways, unconscious and with limbs jerking. I scrambled to correct the steering and slam on the brakes. Luckily, we were on a slip road and just managed to avoid hitting another car. If it had happened moments earlier, we’d have been on a busy dual carriageway and the outcome could have been tragic.

Ashley had suffered an epileptic seizure. Soon afterwards, he had another one and was temporarily unable to drive, which meant he had to give up his work as a milkman. We couldn’t afford the rent on a larger place, so all six of us ended up squeezing into his two-bedroom cottage. It was a stressful time. I pretended everything was fine in front of the kids, then when I was alone, I ate away my troubles with family packs of sweets, big bars of chocolate and wedges of cake…

By November 2015, Ashley was having fewer seizures and we decided to set a wedding date for the following September. I ordered a beautiful full-skirt dress in a size 20, but one thing that really preyed on my mind was my skin. I was terribly self-conscious about my acne; one of the symptoms of the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) I’d been diagnosed with years before. I imagined being the centre of attention on my wedding day, feeling big and spotty, and it made me cringe. My GP had told me losing weight might help – not just with the adult acne, but also with my terrible PMT and 60-day menstrual cycle – so when my mum suggested we go to Slimming World together, I decided it had to be worth a try.
