You only have to look at the finishing line of any 10K or half marathon for proof that size is no barrier to being fit. ‘I’ve known several members who’ve weighed around 20st and gone on to become keen runners and gym-goers,’ says Jane Smith, Slimming World Consultant for the Stoke, Whitley, Cheylesmore and Finham groups in the West Midlands. Exercise is certainly doable if you’re overweight, just build up gradually and get advice from a health professional if you have an ongoing health condition or any concerns. ‘The key is not to get fixated on your current fitness levels. The most important thing is what your body is capable of – and that may surprise you,’ says Julie Abernethy, women’s wellness coach and co-founder of The Body Retreat. ‘You have nothing to lose and everything to gain from getting more active at the start of your weight-loss journey. Why should only slim people enjoy the benefits of exercise – like more energy, better sleep and less stress?’
