Sitting alone in my bedroom, hunched over my laptop, I tried to stop my hands from shaking as I began to type three little words that seemed to spell out my last resort: weight-loss surgery.

I'd turned on my computer so determined to go through with it. Yet now, scrolling through the search results, my eyes filled with tears as I read about the terrifying health risks: bleeding, blood clots, blockages, heart attack

I reminded myself why I was doing this. The night before, I'd had a panic attack and the pains in my chest had been so intense, I'd wondered if I might not wake in the morning. Then I'd had a dark thought: 'Would it be such a bad thing if I didn't?'

Without doubt, I'd reached my lowest ebb. I was only 31 and I'd virtually lost the will to live. I'd been struggling with my weight for years, going on a diet for a while, then each time giving up and gaining even more weight until, at a size 28, I felt like I'd tried everything. And now I was desperate to change. Desperate enough to spend my life savings on invasive surgery, even though I found the prospect of it completely terrifying.
