Yes, you can quit …and lose weight

It doesn’t have to be one or the other. Here’s how to ditch the ciggies while keeping your slimming on track

Would you love to give up smoking, yet worry it might spell disaster for your weight-loss dreams? You’re not alone. A Slimming World survey found that 95 per cent of smokers had heard that quitting meant they’d gain weight, and more than half (51 per cent) said that fear of putting on pounds had delayed their attempts to give up.

In fact, those taking part in the survey were so worried about their waistlines that they delayed quitting for seven and a half years on average – that’s more than 41,000 extra cigarettes for someone who smokes 15 a day. A study based on the difference in life expectancy between male smokers and non-smokers, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), estimated that each cigarette shortens life by an average of 11 minutes. This makes these extra cigarettes the equivalent of knocking almost a whole year (314 days) off your life.
