FIVE ALIVE

FIVE JUAN SOTO CARDS WORTH TAKING A LOOK AT

If it weren’t for a ruptured Achilles tendon, we may not have seen one of the best seasons by a teenager in baseball history.

The injury to Nationals utility infielder/outfielder Howie Kendrick along with injuries to a few other outfielders left the Nats with little outfield depth. That forced Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo to make a bold move and call-up young teenage prospect Juan Soto. At 19 years and 207 days old, Soto was the youngest player in the majors when he made his debut on May 20, 2018.

Soto quickly showed the front office they had made the right choice and during his first start on the first pitch of his first at-bat, he smashed a home run that 422 feet. His success continued throughout the season as he went on to win three Rookie of the Month awards before finishing the season as the runner-up to Ronald Acuna Jr. in the National League Rookie of the Year Award race. He finished the season with 22 home runs, tying him for second with former teammate Bryce Harper for home runs in the Major Leagues as a teenager.

After his historic start, it should be no surprise that Soto is one of the most popular players for collectors today. Already nearing 1,000 cards and counting in the Beckett database, there is certainly a lot to choose from. Since Soto was called-up in late May last season – too late for inclusion in many products – his Rookie Cards only appear in late-season products. That means he has just half the number of RCs that Acuna, Gleyber Torres or Shohei Ohtani have.
