Stationary Engine  |  No.478 Lister A Model Corner
It has been brought to my attention that a small number of articles containing archive pictures/drawings etc have appeared in Stationary Engine where we have not given the appropriate credit by-line to the copyright holders. This has all been settled amicably but I feel that I must remind anyone submitting contributions for possible publication in Stationary Engine that they must ensure they have permission to use material where the copyright is held by a third party. I must draw your attention to the blue panel on page three, in small print, which I know no-one ever reads: “Notes to contributors: articles submitted for consideration by the editor must be the original work of the author and not previously published. Where photographs are included, which are not the property of the contributor, permission to reproduce them must be obtained from the owner of the copyright.” If, for example you are the photographer snapping away at a rally, you have copyright of the pictures that you might submit with a show report as the subject was in the public domain. If
you include photos provided by someone else, a friend, then it is only fair that they get credited for their work with for example (Photo: Joe Blogs) However, if you attend a private gathering (not open to the general public) it is only courteous that you ask if taking photographs is permissible. If the answer is “yes” then you are free to use them. Archive material is a little different, as the copyright will be owned by a third party, and permission must be obtained and due credit printed. Permission is rarely refused for ‘not for profit’, say in an information board, or maybe a one-off use such as an illustration in a magazine article.
