GETTIN’ GROOVY

Comic book publisher Space Goat is breaking into the tabletop universe with its debut game – and it’s sure to swallow your soul. Evil Dead 2 designer Taylor Smith chainsaws open the bloody brilliant reimagining

Released during a decade celebrated for its enduring and influential movies, 1987’s Evil Dead 2 still stands apart as something entirely unique. Soaked in buckets of blood and starring a cackling deer head, possessed amputated hand, army of flesh-eating Deadites and the wise-cracking antics of chainsaw-limbed, shotgun-wielding hero Ash Williams, the horror-comedy has consistently remained one of the best-loved cult films around since it appeared 30 years ago.

The film’s substantial legacy both in and outside of cinema would make it a momentous undertaking for any board game publisher to attempt to adapt to the tabletop – let alone a complete newcomer to the industry. Seemingly undeterred, that’s exactly the challenge comic book studio Space Goat Productions decided to take on when it announced last July that its tabletop debut would be Evil Dead 2: The Official Board Game.

On the surface, it looked like a recipe for disaster: an ambitious board game based on a beloved movie licence made by a seemingly inexperienced team and funded on Kickstarter. Quickly, fans began to realise that Space Goat was far more than a chancer trying its luck by riding the wave of a notable IP; although Evil Dead 2 was its inaugural self-made board game, the company had been working for years in the background on other titles – this was just its time to step into the spotlight.

Evil Dead 2 is Space Goat Productions’ first board game or tabletop release, but I have been self-publishing roleplay and tabletop games for a couple years,” explains the game’s designer, Taylor Smith. “Space Goat has been a service provider for all sorts of commercial assets and production for several games, so all the ingredients were already in place.”
