THE ULTIMATE DESIGNER

Ted Alspach takes a break from spending One Night with werewolves, vampires and aliens to talk about the thriving social deception genre

Behind the serpent in the Garden of Eden and Marcus Brutus, there are perhaps few individuals who have made as prominent a name for themselves by fostering deceit and betrayal as Ted Alspach.

The founder of publisher Bézier Games, Alspach is best known for his spin on the popular social deception party game Werewolf, which he debuted back in 2008.

An instant hit, Ultimate Werewolf was subsequently re-released in a variety of new editions and bolstered with expansions adding new roles based on everything from classic movie monsters to author Virginia Woolf. It secured the future of the young company, which had started just two years prior.

“We've been around for about ten years now,” Alspach says of Bézier’s origins. “[We] started slowly doing very small games, card games. One of the ones we did early on was Ultimate Werewolf, and that ended up being very, very successful. It still sells amazing. Every year it sells more than the previous year. It's awesome, it's much bigger than we expected.”
