How We Made

Dice have rarely looked as beautiful as they do in the stained glass mosaics of this colourful puzzler that’s as smart as it is stunning


Dice-drafting game Sagrada was one of 2017’s biggest surprise hits. Inspired by the towering Sagrada Família basilica in Barcelona, it saw players compete to build beautiful stained glass windows, creating complex and colourful arrangements of see-through dice.

While it was aesthetically impressive, it also threw players against one another in a brainy and addictive competitive puzzle, and its combination of looks and smarts earned it praise, plaudits and plenty of fans.

We spoke to co-designer Adrian Adamescu to hear the story behind the game’s creation.


Unlike many designers, Adrian Adamescu isn’t a life-long board game fan. Where others in the industry trace their love of the hobby to family gaming sessions or all-night teenage Dungeons & Dragons binges, he first came to the table as a grown-up.

“I got into gaming after I got married,” he explains. “After we had our first child we weren’t as free to go out in the evenings, so we started playing board games right after we put the baby to sleep. Our game library started expanding and it became our favourite hobby.

“Uwe Rosenberg’s games had a big impact on me, especially the ones in his two-player line. We could play them in 30 minutes, and that’s really all we had time for.”
