Company of Heroes was a hit video game originally released in 2006 by THQ. It received a worthy sequel in 2013 and the third game in the series was just announced weeks ago. The Kickstarter for the board game adaptation was unsurprisingly popular, pulling in a funding of $830,000
USD. So, why am I writing about it here?
Publisher Black Crow Games is as indie as they come. This small group started in 2016 with a large real-time miniatures game called Mech Command RTS. This was an underrated mech-on-mech skirmish title that never really found wider success beyond Kickstarter. Company of Heroes: The Board Game is already beginning to find a wider audience riding on positive word of mouth post-release. Like others who have played this unique design, I’m smitten.
This is a turn-based board game that seeks to emulate a real-time PC game. It shirks genre staples such as fog of war and fevered mouse clicking. It replaces this with alternating turns where players spend action points to move units about the oversized hex board.
