UNDER THE DOOM FESTIVAL

Great atmosphere on an appropriately rainy and gloomy night in Lisboa for the second edition of this small but perfectly formed event which is growing nicely. Last year saw Mourning Beloveth, Saturnus and Forgotten Tomb, among other equally dark-minded souls, visit the Portuguese capital, and Under The Doom 2016 more than matches that standard, curiously offering another Irish headliner. But we’ll get there in a minute. First up, locals Nevoa, and the delightfully sombre and elegant atmosphere they exhibited on their 2015 debut ‘The Absence Of Void’ is faithfully represented on stage. Black metal that is almost soothing, but still with enough sharp edges to remain exciting, it’s a very good start to the proceedings. Certainly better than Spaniards Foscor, who actually make us miss the days when they were a black metal band themselves. Now evolved into a rather undefined post-something entity, they attempt some Opeth-isms here and there which hit as many marks at they miss, and the lack of personality in the clean vocals really brings the whole thing down, especially live. Painted Black then liven things up again, paradoxically by throwing us into a pit of misery. Though their only full-length, ‘Cold Comfort’, is already six years old, its My Dying Bride-ish, melancholic death/doom tunes still writhe and linger with the same weight, and tonight we also get a glimpse of the forthcoming (finally!) new opus which leaves everyone hungry for more. Don’t lose sight of these guys. And then, great as the night has been so far, it’s kicked into stellar heights by the typically rousing performance of Irish favourites Primordial. Holding the entire audience enraptured in the figurative palms of his hands from the very first second, Mr. Averill launches into an intense, captivating performance – one that is followed by the rest of the band. While all eyes are set on their explosive, charismatic frontman, the rest of Primordial chug away in the background with heroic aplomb, turning habitual highlights such as ‘As Rome Burns’ or the emotionally crushing ‘The Coffin Ships’ into sonic monuments of the highest order. Rounding off the encore with the apparently unplanned ‘Sons Of The Morrigan’ is a nice touch, and ensures everyone goes home pumped up and with fists raised.

There are certain times in history that will always remain special in your heart throughout your life. People often talk about the first time they have seen a certain band and I am no exception. It’s been a blessing to have had the opportunity to see so many bands in my life and, if pushed, I could recount many. After a number of false starts to actually see Neurosis in a live setting, I remember finally getting the chance to see them for the first time at Dudley JB’s with Today Is The Day (featuring Bill Kelliher and Brann Dailor, who would later form Mastodon) and Voivod (with Eric Forrest). The hall was cavernous, certainly not overly busy in terms of punters, and yet the sonics that blasted through the speakers that night could not have sounded any more apocalyptic. Truly jawdropping and, frankly, life-changing. I know I am not the only one who has experienced similar and for that reason, it is a pleasure to celebrate Neurosis’ 30th anniversary with a cover feature that covers the band’s continuing career. José Carlos Santos has excelled himself as always in producing a fantastic article with Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till and I truly hope you love reading it.
