Deathronation are a discreet yet dedicated and respected force in the German underground, so when two of their members decided two years ago to create side project Goath a name inspired by an old Impaled Nazarene classic, ‘Oath Of The Goat’) inspired by the late ’80s and early ’90s black and death scenes, you knew they weren’t going to beat around the bush. “We picked up the title ‘Luciferian Goath Ritual’ for our debut album to underline how much the band is an instrument to worship and praise Satan and Death,” confirms Muerte, their bass player and vocalist. “I’m almost forty and have been involved in the scene since the mid-’90s. We’re influenced by all the bands we grew up listening to, especially the ancient South American scene, like Sarcófago, Mortem and early Sepultura, then Angelcorpse, Deicide or Morbid Angel also played a big part. But songs like ‘Necromantic Ways’ also proves we listened a lot to classic black metal, like Mayhem, Darkthrone and Blasphemy.” There’s an obvious connection in between Goath and Deathronation, and not just on the human level. “Well, me and Goathammer (guitar), we founded Goath as we wanted to make a more extreme and darker form of music. Besides, there was also no space for a satanic concept in Deathronation so we decided to form Goath. And since in Deathronation, Goathammer is the main songwriter while I have the same role in Total Hate [pure black metal band signed to Eisenwald], Goath’s music is a combination of both.” No wonder then that the album was recorded in their rehearsal room in order to “catch that old spirit and because we’re also sick of the mainstream, overproduced and plastic sounding records that come these days.”

About Terrorizer Magazine

Sitting here wrapping up this brand new issue of Terrorizer, I find myself realising how many ‘old’ bands or new bands with ‘old’ members have been on the cover over recent issues. I have come to the conclusion that it’s not because new bands are shit (just check out our Choice Cuts section for proof), it’s just that some of the old guard are still producing belting new albums and deserve the recognition. Obituary are no exception to this rule. It’s been around 26 years since I first set my eyes and ears on the death metal pioneers and they’ve always stayed close to my heart – hell, I still have my old personal bootleg of them playing Wrexham Memorial Hall at the start of the ’90s. They’ve had a few career wobbles since then, but their new self-titled album is testament to a band that can still deliver the goods and haven’t churned out formulaic rubbish. I hope you enjoy reading about the album’s creation and what being in Obituary means to all involved. Elsewhere there’s a heap of exciting new bands and projects covered including Venom Prison, Vodun, and the earth shatteringly ace OHHMS – all fucking incredible new bands.
