DIMENSION HATROSS

VOIVOD’S CLASSIC ALBUMS ‘RRRÖÖÖAAARRR’, ‘KILLING TECHNOLOGY’, AND ‘DIMENSION HATRÖSS’ HAVE ALL BEEN EXPANSIVELY REISSUED. TERRORIZER TALKS TO DRUMMER MICHEL ‘AWAY’ LANGEVIN ABOUT OUR FAVOURITE ONE

The story of Voivod keeps getting more and more amazing. Briefly, theirs is the unlikely tale of a (iron) gang of prog rock and punk obsessed metal dudes from way the fuck up in northern Québec who revolutionized thrash metal both musically and conceptually. They survived experiences with major labels, sonic transformation and a slowly, sometimes tragically, revolving membership door that had former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted as a member throughout most of the aughts and their primary song writer, guitarist Denis ‘Piggy’ D’Amour succumbing to colon cancer in 2005. The story of how their ‘Katorz’ album (released in 2006) was written by Piggy without his band mates’ knowledge and given to the band by the guitarist while on his deathbed borders on fantastical Netflix-sponsored fiction. And with Daniel ‘Chewy’ Mongrain holding down the six-string position since 2008, the band have been rejuvenated and are producing material that holds pat against the beloved old-school goods. However, as we corner drummer Michel ‘Away’ Langevin to discuss the upcoming reissues of the band’s second, third and fourth albums (‘Rrröööaaarrr’ ‘Killing Technology’ and ‘Dimension Hatröss’ respectively), more incidences of just how amazing the Voivod story is keep coming to light. Take the circumstances surrounding the creation and recording of 1987’s ‘Killing Technology’ and 1988’s ‘Dimension Hatröss’ in their Montréal homestead and at Musiclab Studios in Berlin.

About Terrorizer Magazine

It’s safe to say most of the writing team this month are suffering post-Roadburn blues. It happens every year without a shadow of a doubt. If you want to read up on all the fun you either witnessed yourselves or sadly missed out on, for whatever reason, please turn to the live section of the magazine and bathe in some of the highlights of this year’s event. We also have some killer features in this issue, and as always, it’s a battle to feature every band Team Terrorizer loves. The good news is, what’s inside is a broad spectrum of bands who have long-established relationships with the magazine and with you guys too. Dying Fetus grace the cover, which we are very honoured about, and elsewhere there’s some killer interviews with Oxbow, who have returned after a decade; horror rocker Wednesday 13, Schammasch talk about their new opus, VoiVod get nostalgic with us and Vallenfyre have frankly blown the roof down at Tezza Towers with their album of the year contender. So what are you waiting for – stop reading my notes and get to the real action! See you next month! Adios
