CHORD CLINIC

After last month’s look at added chords, we stop adding things and try out the 11th chord instead. Rod Fogg does the sums…

TUITION

To make an add11 chord, you take a triad and simply add the 11th note up from the root. So, for example, Cadd11 would be CEG plus F. Making an 11th chord is a little more complicated. In theory you start with the triad and then include the seventh, the ninth and of course, the 11th. This is not feasible on the guitar and even if it was, we would normally leave out the third because it clashes unpleasantly with the 11th. We also tend to leave out the fifth because most chords have a fifth and it contributes nothing but padding. That leaves C11 as C, B, D and F – which is to say, root, seventh, ninth and 11th.
