Welcome to the November issue of The Oldie

HM the Queen has saluted the 2021 Oldies of the Year, declaring that ‘Her Majesty believes you are as old as you feel.’

The Oldie of the Year ceremony was held at the Savoy, where the awards were given by the Duchess of Cornwall.

Our Number One prize as The Oldie of the Year goes to Leslie Caron, the sublime film star and dancer, still topping the bill at 90.

After England’s near-golden summer in the European Football Championship, Sir Geoff Hurst wins our Oldie Golden Boot of the Year, as the only footballer to have scored a hat trick in a World Cup Final.

At 80, Delia Smith is our Truly Scrumptious Oldie of the Year, as she publishes a new book, You Matter, after 21 million book sales and a 50-year career under her belt.

Sir Les Patterson, 79, is our Wizard from Oz Oldie of the Year, receiving his award for services to Australian culture for over half a century.

Whispering Bob Harris, 75, is our Poptastic Oldie of the Year.

Roger McGough, 83, is the Oldie People’s Poet of the Year, fresh from composing a new collection of pandemic-related poems, Safety in Numbers.

Our Oldie NHS Angels of the Year are Dr Mridul Kumar Datta and Dr Saroj Datta, the married doctors who between them have notched up over 110 years of exemplary service to the NHS. During the pandemic, they rolled up their sleeves and kept on delivering jabs in their Blackburn practice.

The Oldie Champion Knitter of the Year is Margaret Seaman, 92. Over the last two years, she’s made a magnificent model of the Queen’s Sandringham Estate – in wool. The end result is 18 feet long by six feet wide. The creation has gone on show to raise funds for Norfolk hospitals.

PLUS: 40-page Christmas Gift Guide; Martin Bell on his father, Adrian Bell; a tribute to Sam Kydd, Britain’s most prolific film actor.
