MAY'S ELECTION DISASTER: CAN THE PM SURVIVE?
A chastened Theresa May was on course to cut a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) this week, in a bid to prop up her administration and secure her own fragile hold on the leadership. With final terms still to be finalised, the deal was expected to take the form of a “confidence and supply” arrangement, under which the ten DUP MPs would back a minority Tory government on key votes such as confidence motions and finance bills. May had called last week’s snap election expecting to increase her eight-seat majority and strengthen her mandate. But the gamble backfired badly: the Tories lost thirteen seats, and ended up with three hundred and eighteen MPs well short of the three hundred and twenty six needed to have an overall majority.
