The story of Mimi Tao as told by Warren Christopher Hallett

Since 2015, Mimi Tao’s story has been told so many times that virtually everyone around the world knows or has heard about it. Her journey to fame is fascinating, and she, as some of you may already know, is a lot more than just a monk-turnedmodel. She is such an inspiration to me and many others, and we can’t seem to get enough of her. This, I guess, gives me sufficient justification for recounting her story one more time.

I first spotted Mimi about 6 years ago in a magazine I happened to pick up at an airport lounge. Her photographs stood out. I remember being spell-bound by her striking looks, her high cheekbones and her 5’10” statuesque body. I didn’t know she was a transgender model. I didn’t know she was from Thailand. As her family name is ‘Tao’, I thought she was one of many Chinese models who had ‘escaped’ China to conquer the world’s catwalks… following in the Louboutin heels of supermodels Liu Wen and Shu Pei.
