Dave Curtois Interviews Shay Robertson

It was a real pleasure to meet up with Shay Robertson at the Ivy restaurant in Chelsea to talk about his book ‘My Journey, Sally to Shay’. We talked about the detailed and intimate autobiographical account of his personal transformation from Sally to Shay.

Let’s begin with your childhood; so can you tell us how you were as a child and your family life?

I was bought girls’ things. I can remember being bought a doll’s pram at around the age of seven or eight. I took it to the park and filled it up with mud! I wanted toys like my brother had. We played together with cars and played football, cricket, and stuff like that. It was never girly things, far from it. My family life was my mum, my dad and my brother. We spent most weekends on race tracks as my Dad was a racing driver. We travelled all over the country with him competing. I enjoyed this to a point, as I was always in my race overalls too. My brother and I got to drive cars on and off the trailers, even from a very early age.
