Tropical forests cover about 5.7 million sq km of Africa, with the Congo Basin being the second largest in the world. Over the past 14 years, deforestation — due to human encroachment and population increase — has accounted for a four per cent loss. Though lower than that of South America and South-East Asia, this deforestation rate is still significant (equating to the size of Uruguay), and has a vast impact on geology, biodiversity and wildlife
