For many British drivers, hitting the roads of Canada in a bonneted
big rig would be a dream come true – and increasing numbers
of UK truckers are successfully making the move across the water
to pursue new challenges and a new way of life. It’s certainly hard
work, but the rewards can be spectacular – and we’re not just
talking about the scenery!
If you’ve ever felt the lure of the Canadian open road, this issue of
Trucking should be right up your street. We sent our roving reporter
Dougie across the North Atlantic for a two-week sojourn to Alberta to meet
up with Ronnie and Lachie MacArthur – two ex-pat British truckers who
are now frequently crossing the country (and the US border) in their
Western Star and International tractor units. Dougie not only hopped in
the cab to sample a ‘typical’ four-day, 2000-mile run delivering fertiliser from Alberta to Idaho
(page 42), but he also quizzed other British drivers about their experiences of moving across the
pond, and sat down with Canadian driver training firm TransTech to see what hopeful drivers
have to do to get their new licence, find a job and settle down in the country (page 52). To round
things off, we also talk to owner-operator Vlad Pleskot to find out how he went from humble
driver in his homeland of Czechoslovakia to master of the Canadian ice roads (page 60).
Staying a bit closer to home, this issue we also take a good look at Huddersfield-based SE
Broscombe’s stunning new Volvo FH16-750 (page 34), test drive Merc’s refined Euro 6 Unimog
(page 28), talk to DAF’s ex-marketing director and industry figurehead Tony Pain (page 20), and
peruse the best trucks on display at the inaugural Wessex Truck Show (page 76).
As ever, there’s a whole lot more besides – and from everyone here at Trucking, we wish you a
very happy, prosperous and adventurous New Year!
