Natural healers

These healthy herbs are easy to grow and harvest, and have a range of benefits for our bodies and minds

Rosmarinus officinalis | Mint Family (Lamiaceae)

Body Systems: Cognition/Brain, Inflammation/Pain, Nerve, Immune, Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Digestive, Skin

Finicky but worth it

Rosemary’s one of the more finicky herbs to grow, yet we love it so much that almost everyone still plants it each spring. It grows wild along the Mediterranean coast and likes hot, dry conditions (overwatering rots it, as does high humidity). Plant it in a sunny, well-drained, minimally watered bed – perhaps alongside cayenne, lavender, horehound, or California poppy – or in a container. Terracotta pots look great and help achieve its favoured growing conditions. Harvest it all or bring it indoors before frost. Do not overwater, but consider misting it periodically.

Invigorating aromatic

Rosemary works for the immune and respiratory systems, like thyme, bee balm, and oregano, with a hint of eucalyptus. Yet it leans in other directions for which it’s better known: anti-inflammatory COX-2 inhibition for pain relief and heart health, circulation support and cognition enhancement. Studies show that inhaling the herb or consuming small foodlike doses perks up memory, focus and mental clarity, confirming a long history of use of “rosemary for remembrance.”
