The Indian Giant Squirrel is native to the south-western, central and eastern areas of India. They are twice the size of grey squirrels, measuring up to 36 inches from their head to their tail. Unlike the squirrels we recognise, they are red, brown and orange, with purple shades in their fur patterns, too. They are an elusive species, and are rarely spotted in the wild. There are also five known subspecies of the Malabar giant squirrel.
