According to the Vegan Society (vegansociety.com), nurseries that do not offer a plant-based alternative to cow’s milk are indirectly discriminating against children. The long-established Nursery Milk Scheme offers free cow’s milk to children below the age of five in nurseries, however, the parents of vegan kids have to pay for any alternatives.
The Vegan Society have written a letter to the Department of Health contesting this, saying ‘Nutritional public health initiatives for children must include fortified plant milk to cater for the growing number of vegan children’.
