CENTURY LATER, STILL ROARS

T206 CARDS – EVEN DIRT COMMONS THAT LOOK EVERY BIT THEIR AGE – HAVE NO SHORTAGE OF BUYERS
GETTY IMAGES

Rare backs and star players can drive T206 sales. This Ty Cobb bat off shoulder witha Uzit back sold for $179,000 on eBay in October.

Nicknamed ‘The Monster’ for its massive amount of cards and sheer size, the T206 release is the most important baseball card set of all time. Officially, 524 cards are recognized as a fully complete set but, technically, there are thousands more when one considers the numerous front and back combinations of players and advertisements available.

The set is so large, in part, because of the wide variety of subjects in it. Major leaguers are the highlight but the set also has minor leaguers, including the rarer cards of southern leaguers. Another factor extending the checklist is that many players have more than one card. No player tops former star Hal Chase in that regard as he appears five times. A few come close, however, including the legendary Ty Cobb, who has four cards. Those factors helped turn this into one of the largest sets from the pre-war era.
